The Two Fridas

The Two Fridas

Today we celebrate the birth and life of one of our favorite Lady Hustlers, Frida Kahlo. Although most famous for her paintings, she was also a passionate social and political activist. She even made a statement with her appearance through her choice to grow out her facial hair and just in case haters didn’t notice, she would accentuate it. Through her art, Frida captivated beauty that empowered women and magnified Indigenous Mexican culture. Even after her death in 1954 she is still seen as an artistic icon with a powerful legacy. While she’s known more for her visual art, she also had a way with words. Here are ten of our favorite quotes from Frida Kahlo.

I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.
— Frida Kahlo
At the end of the day, we can endure so much more than we think we can.

English Translation:

I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought there are so many people in the world there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.
