Meet Your Editor-in-Chief: Denisse
My name is Denisse, but most people call me 'D' or 'thugnanny.' Yes, people actually call me that in real life.
Weird Story: When I was in high school, everyone called me 'Hooch.' Some people still call me that too! I realize now, as an adult adulting in the real world, that was a bad idea. I'm still trying to figure out how I got that nickname since it isn't fitting at all. Care to explain, high school friends?
I really wish I had a middle name, but I don't. So my executive editors, Mimi and Olivia, gave me a new name: Denisse Beyoncé Pad Thai Hustle Benitez. I'm thinking of getting a name plate. You know — to make it real.
I am a full time business owner (photography and design), and a part-time nanny to the two most beautiful girls in the most amazing family.
I love cooking crazy meals, hosting, and people. But I also like meals that take 10 minutes to make, sitting home with a book, and being alone. I'm an extroverted introvert. It is both a curse and a curse.. err.. blessing!
Fun fact: I lost every camera I was gifted for Christmas three years in a row.
I started Lady Hustle Mag for MANY reasons. I wanted to create a place where women could be celebrated, and their hustles could be exposed whether they had 100k followers or 100. Many many reasons. We'll discuss them all one day!
I don't have single favorites of anything. I love a lot of things deeply.
But if I have to narrow it down, my favorite album of all time is Blue by Joni Mitchell.
BUT my favorite songs are: Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah as sung by Jeff Buckley," Natalie Cole's "I Wish You Love," (Johnnyswim does an INCREDIBLE cover of this on their new album), and I LOVE "Yellow" by Coldplay.
Fun Fact: My grandfather gave my father a lot of his vinyls when my dad came to this country, and my dad passed them down to me. I have a ton of of them, and I hope to one day have a ginormous collection to pass on to my people (who will probably ask me what it does because by then we'd be playing music out of chips in our fingertips).
I don't watch tons of TV, but my favorite show ever is Grey's Anatomy. Grey's taught me about life, love, and surgery. I can perform an open heart surgery in an elevator in case of an emergency. JK I can't even successfully play Operation.
My favorite movies are Mrs. Doubtfire, Anastasia, and A Little Princess.
Confession: I read all of James Patterson's Women's Murder Club books in high school. I was obsessed with James Patterson, and only worked at the library so I wouldn’t have to pay late fees and so I could take out a million of his books out at a time. I actually have an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice (blame James Patterson). I really did swear I'd be a homicide detective. We can also blame Detective Benson for that.
My favorite book is Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes.
I am inspired by so many people, especially women. My mom is my biggest inspiration (THANKS MOM)! I'm lucky enough to know some kickass humans who are killing it at life. My bosses inspire, encourage, challenge, and push me as well as my LH ladies who inspire me to be a better leader and human. They are the greatest people ever. My persons: Nina and Pam! I love Jodie Lane, Elizabeth Gilbert, Shonda Rhimes (who is my best friend, she just doesn't know it), and a few others. For someone who isn't a people person, there are just so many people that I love!
My hope for Lady Hustle is that you can come here and leave inspired. I want people to read our content and feel like they can conquer the universe after. Or at least Monday. I want you to feel you can AT LEAST conquer Mondays. Mondays and pants. We got this!
