Mar Ortiz is a reality TV star, singer, songwriter, and hair & makeup artist from northern New Jersey. She recently posted a selfie on instagram that has stirred up the internet with body shaming debates. Read all about it below.
LH: Hi Mar! Can you tell us a little bit about your self?
MO: I am 100% Puerto Rican! 100% Latina, which most people don't think I am. So odd! I'm an aspiring singer and reality star of Lifetime's Big Women: Big Love. I recently posted a selfie that stirred up a big debate on the internet!
Someone told me "Mar you're losing weight...." I said "Really? You think so? I eat a burger, fries and pizza like everyday..." LOL Why does size matter? Big or small.... I love my LOVE handles! I don't care about having abs or eating a salad everyday. I do believe in taking healthier days and balance. I #celebratemysize everyday! I love my curves and body. If I want to lose weight it will be a personal choice and it shouldn't matter to anyone else but me. 😘 #imnoangel#plusisequal#effyourbeautystandards#bigwomenbiglove#loveyourhandles

LH: Let's talk about your selfie since that seems to be a popular topic on the interweb right now.
LH: What was on your mind when you posted this selfie? Did you think it was going to go as viral as it has?
MO: The selfie was just an ordinary selfie to me, or so I thought. I legit had no idea it would go viral. I was just feeling sexy and beautiful in my skin. I snapped a few, and that one made the cut. I uploaded the picture thinking it would get a few likes. I had no idea. The only thing I regret at the moment is not making my bed, haha!
LH: Haha, I regret that every single time I walk out of my room. That's crazy though! Who would have thought a woman feeling great in her own skin would shock the internet?
LH: What are some of the responses you've been getting from your selfie?
MO: Truth be told! I've been getting both positive and negative responses. When I started to see the negative comments on my picture, and all the responses to follow, I could not keep up. I've been focusing more so on the positive ones because my post wasn't to be taken negative. I wanted to empower my fans to love themselves. The internet is a scary place full of negative trolls!
LH: Tell me about it. There's always someone behind a screen ready to tell you all about yourself.
LH: I'm happy you mentioned self love. It's a rarity these days. What would you say has influenced or inspired you to feel the way you do about yourself?
MO: I went through a rough patch this past year. It mainly came from a bad breakup, and my first actual heartbreak. I felt so worthless and insecure. I was questioning myself so much. I was asking myself, "Am I even pretty or beautiful?" Like how could this guy not want to be with me? It hurt my ego! Till one day I woke up, and said to myself I never want to feel this way ever again! I am beautiful! I'm going to love myself so much that no one else has to. I'm ok with that!
LH: That's refreshing! I wish all women felt that way at least once a day! I also love how you were able to be honest with yourself, and really put those feelings in check. It's sometimes very hard to come back from that.
MO: Absolutely! It was the hardest thing to deal with.
LH: Tell us a little more about your music career.
MO: Currently, I have an album/EP pending. It's entitled "The Heartache EP". I'm waiting on a few things before I can release it. The EP includes all original songs I wrote based on heartache in relationships. I feel like that's never ending these days, haha! I was thinking of adding a new song before releasing it, but I also feel like the EP will be pending my whole life if that's the case! I just hope that my audience can relate to each song, and truly love and understand why I wrote them.
LH: I guess you can add it to the full length album after the EP. I'm sure people will love it. You're a super talented force.

LH: What did your life look like growing up, and where did you imagine you'd be at this time?
MO: My childhood and teenage years were amazing! I grew up in Passaic, New Jersey, an urban populated city. What I am most proud of about coming from Passaic was learning how to be street smart. I never imagined I would be where I am today! I've been very blessed with so many opportunities, and beyond grateful for them. I look forward to 2016 being a great year!
LH: Did you always know you wanted to be a singer? You also work in the cosmetology field as well, correct?
MO: I've been singing since I was 11-years old. I performed solo for the first time in the 6th grade, and I sang "Hero" by Mariah Carey. I got a standing ovation, and that's when it hit me that I wanted to become a singer. I was involved in choir from elementary through high school, which led to me being named "Most Talented" in my high school graduating class. I do work as a freelance makeup artist, and have been in the cosmetology field for a few years now. It's also another talent I have, but music is my passion.
LH: You wear so many hats! That's incredible, congratulations on that. As someone who wants to do it all, it's inspiring to see someone doing it all.
MO: Thank you so much!
LH: What's your favorite dish?
MO: Oh my goodness, PIZZZZZA! Haha, legit is my favorite food till infinity and beyond!
LH: I LOVE PIZZA, haha -- What's your dream pie?
MO: I'm so traditional when it comes to pizza, it's all about the sauce and cheese for me. But my dream pie would be a man making me homemade pizza and serving itn to me with wine, that's my life goal! Haha.

LH: Talk to me about Big Women: Big Love. What is the show about, how did it come into your life, and how has your time on the show been?
MO: BWBL is about five plus sized women looking for love, and their day to day life as plus size women. I applied for it when my friend emailed the casting call to me. I never expected to get a call, let alone get on the show. My experience was amazing! I met so many new people and it has been such a learning experience. I learned a lot about myself from it.
LH: Now, your life is on full display in a situation like that. Especially now with your selfie going viral and your social media following growing so rapidly, do you think that, as some people have said, you're glorifying an unhealthy lifestyle?
MO: That has been the main concern with the trolls and the haters! When I heard that I was glorifying obesity, I was like WTF! I'm so not glorifying an unhealthy lifestyle, nor do I promote that. My social media is a reflection of who I am. I glorify SELF-LOVE! Living your life for you and doing the things you love and make you happy!
LH: Right, and I think anyone who knows you, or even browses through your social media, can attest to that. Your goal is to spread love, light, and confidence.
MO: Thank you my love! That is the goal! Love, light, and confidence!

LH: What is your next step and how will you use this new exposure?
MO: I believe in going with the flow for the most part. Right now I am hoping to continue to inspire my followers, and get the word out there that body shaming is not ok, and body positivity is key to a healthy lifestyle. I am working on a lot of things for this upcoming year. I have a big "To Be Continued" sign up, haha!
LH: That's awesome! I feel like my life is sometimes a huge "To Be Continued" sign, so I can relate.
MO: Haha, the constant struggle of the dreamers and doers!
LH: What's your current favorite song and your favorite song growing up?
MO: I listen to everything. My current favorite song, hmmm! I don't have one at the moment! There is so much good music out! But growing up my obsession was anything Mariah Carey!
LH: I love Mariah too!
LH: How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?
MO: Sure, I'm 33 going on 23! I have that JLo gene! No one ever guesses my age!
LH: You so don't look 33!
MO: I was thinking of saying I just stopped aging at 30, haha!
LH: I know that in the music industry it's common to have to look a certain way, be in a certain age bracket, and fit their mold. Have you had any struggles in your music career because of your age or weight?
MO: Absolutely! All the industry standards! I've been put in a box and shelved! But the beauty about the pursuit of your dreams is to live them without anyone telling you that you can't accomplish them because of your age or weight! I always have and will believe in trusting the timing of your life, and never giving up! In this day and age, anything is possible!!!
LH: Amazing words!

LH: SO you're catching a cab and happen to get into one with Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, and Pharell. They have a four minute ride and agree to let you sing for them. What do you sing?
MO: Oh man, haha, I would most definitely sing something original. I would also probably try to make out with Pharell. God, I love him! Haha!
LH: Haha, I know! That's why I threw him in there.
LH: Do you have any advice you can offer your fellow Lady Hustlers who are struggling with self love, perhaps even their age or just confidence in general?
MO: Hustle and FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! Never give up! And ALWAYS LOVE YOURSELF!
